20 perish on Lake Albert boat accident

Passengers prepare to take off in a boat for Kasenyi in the Democratic Republic of Congo from Buhuka landing site of Uganda.

Twenty people have been confirmed dead after the boat they were travelling in capsized on Lake Albert in Buliisa District on Tuesday night.

The Albertine Region Police Spokesperson told Kazi-njema News today (Thursday) that the deceased were fish mongers travelling from Runga landing site in Kigorobya Sub-county, Hoima District in Bunyoro en-route to Panyimur market in Pakwach District, West Nile region.

Mr Julius Allan Hakiza identifies some of the deceased as Margaret Anirwoth, Beriunyaju, Kwinyo Cwing, Nyamini Usuu, Sunday Chombe and Kolodini Ochi all business people from Runga landing site.

The police officer says the bodies that have been retrieved are being handed to the relatives showing up claiming them.

Nine survivors have been rescued today on top of 12 others who were rescued last (Wednesday) evening.

The rescue and search exercise is still underway being conducted by marine police, the army and fishermen according to Mr Hakiza.

The police officer attributes the 9pm accident to bad weather and overloading.
