Five people died when a truck carrying sugarcane cutters plunged into River Waaki at Bineneza Village in Nyantonzi Sub-county, Masindi District last (Monday) evening.

The Nyantonzi Sub-county Chairman, Sunday Eyotu, identified four of the deceased as Moses Ochen and Francis Ozele both from Buliisa district and two others only identified as Amaku and Semu both from Masindi district.

However, the driver whose identity was not established by publication time escaped unharmed, abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.

The cutters were en-route to Masindi from duty in Kisabagwa village, Kyabigambire sub-county in Hoima district when the Fuso lorry whose registration number was not readily established by publication time plunged into River Waaki that separates Masindi district from Hoima district.

The chairman blamed the accident that happened at around 6pm on the bad mechanical condition of the Fuso lorry whose shovel of brake failed when the driver tried to decelerate as the vehicle approached the bridge across the river.

He also attributed the accident to excessive loading revealing that the lorry was carrying more than 100 sugarcane cutters.

Mr Eyotu advised the management of Kinyara Sugar Limited to set standards for their transporters especially those in the field department to avoid such accidents.

A police officer who did not want to be identified by the press but attached to Katanga police post in Nyantonzi sub-county said they rescued many people from the river including retrieving the bodies and the wreckage.

However, he could not tell the exact number of people who were on board the lorry.

When contacted, the Kinyara Sugar Ltd Public Relations Officer, Richard Mathias Wanok, said he would give information about the matter later.
