The Bunyoro District Kadhi, Sheikh Ashraf Musitapha Kugonza, has been suspended after a successful impeachment by the district Joint Session Committee.
Sheikh Kugonza was suspended by the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, according to the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) acting Public Relations Officer (PRO), Ashraf Zziwa.
In a media statement, the PRO said Sheikh Edris Songolo replaces Sheikh Kugonza in acting capacity.
Also the Mufti has suspended the Masaka district Khadhi, Sheikh Burhan Bagunduse and has been replaced by Sheikh Badru Uzairu Wassajja.
Mr Zziwa added that by making the changes, the Mufti involved his powers under schedules A and B of the UMSC constitution.
“The decision to suspend the two follows successful impeachment by their respective District Joint Sessions Committees for failure to deliver services to their expectation,” Zziwa said.
A Joint Session comprises members of the executive and college of sheikhs.
A circular issued by Sheikh Muhammad Murshid Luwemba, the Religious Affairs Secretary at UMSC says that the duo is expected to hand over office to the new office bearers effective tomorrow Friday, February 26, 2021.
The UMSC constitution stipulates that the Mufti can only appoint a substantive district Khadhi from candidates nominated by the district council on the advice of the Majlis Al-Ulama college of sheikhs.
