The Ministry of Education has denied ongoing speculations indicating the reopening schools in two weeks’ time following a meeting held on August 30, 2021 between technocrats.
The update on the matter was revealed by the Director of Education Standards at the Ministry, Dr Kedrace Turyagenda. She wondered where the earlier media reports were obtained.
“The Ministry of Education has not decided that schools will reopen in two weeks. I haven’t read the paper where that information is and I don’t know where they got it from” Dr Turyagenda said.pe to reopen, please prepare for these children to have what will make them comfortable to learn. The information regarding schools reopening in a period of two weeks appeared first in one of the national dailies earlier yesterday.
Dr Turyagyenda’s remarks follow some media reports that the ministry had agreed to reopen schools in the first two weeks of this month (September), giving priority classes P1, P2, P3, S1 and S3.
The reports claimed that the decision was reached on Monday August 30, during a meeting between education ministry officials and stakeholders in the education sector.
The virtual consultative meeting was held to discuss government proposals for reopening education institutions for completion of 2020 academic year and the progression of learners to the next level amid Covid-19 pandemic.
In the same meeting held on Monday, it was proposed that universities and other tertiary institutions would re-open around September-October in a staggered approach starting with students in their final year.
Whereas some sources at the education ministry have indicated that the schools might be reopened on September 21, top officials have remained tight-lipped on the tentative dates for the reopening.
However, the officials affirm that the reopening process lies majorly at the pace upon which teachers and lecturers across the country receive the Covid-19 vaccine.
