Gov’t tables Shs49.9t national budget framework

Government has tabled the national budget framework totaling Shs49.9t for the 2022/23 financial year.

Mr Matia Kasaija, the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development tabled the document that paves the way for the budget approval process by parliament.

“The preliminary resource envelope for Financial Year 2023/2024 is projected at Shs49.9 trillion compared to Shs48.1 trillion for the Financial Year 2022/2023 reflecting an increase of Shs 1.8 trillion,” he told the House.

According to the Public Finance Management Act, the government should table the budget framework paper before parliament by December 31 and by February 1, the House should have approved the framework paper.

Presiding over the House, Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mr Thomas Tayebwa, referred the framework paper to the Committee on Budget and other relevant sectoral committees for consideration.

He urged the committees to work according to the budget timelines.

“As chairpersons of the committees, we have only one month to process and report to the House by 30 January. You can see our timelines. These are timelines we cannot amend and this is going to be our priority so that we give it justice,” Mr Tayebwa said.
