The Flying Squad Unit of the police in the Albertine region is hunting for thieves suspected to have stolen a gun from a private security guard in Hoima City this morning.

ASP Julius Allan Hakiza, the regional police spokesperson, identifies the security guard who lost the gun as Ms Eunice Kobusiinge, attached to Uganda Securiko Ltd – a private security company.

According to the police officer, Ms Kobusiinge who was guarding at Kaka Spare World on Wright Road downtown Hoima city has been arrested as part of investigations on how she slumbered to the level of losing her gun to unknown thieves while on duty.

ASP Hakiza identifies the lost gun with registration number 303 – 65793POL107928.

He blamed the incident to deployment gaps among private security companies.

“They are encouraged to deploy more than one persons to avoid such incidents. Now, we hear the lady was alone on duty with a night guard armed with bows and arrows. He might also have slumbered when the gun was stolen at around 4:49am according to the statement of the security guard,” said ASP Hakiza.

Mr Shaban Baguma, the Supervisor Uganda Securiko Ltd, Hoima has declined to divulge on the lost gun but said they are co-operating with the police to have the gun recovered and the suspects brought to book.

The incident happens at the time Uganda is witnessing an increase in attacks on national security personnel where some have been killed and guns stolen.

On Friday last week, the military and police in collaboration with residents arrested a man of Rwandese origin for allegedly attacking and robbing a Uganda People’s Defensc Forces (UPDF) soldier of his gun in Bugoma forest Kikuube district.

The AK-47 rifle was also recovered two days of search. The attacked soldier was also arrested and plainly accused by military officials of negligence and self-deployment that is illegal in the UPDF.
