It has been revealed that Hoima Regional Referral Hospital (HRRH) does not have some imaging machines to diagnose patients who seek the services at the facility.
Mr Peter Ojok, the HRRH Senior Hospital Administrator, says the health facility does not have a radiology machine and other machines used to work on different patients who visit the hospital from various districts of Bunyoro and part of Buganda regions.
He says lack of such medical equipment forces the medics to refer patients to Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala to be diagnosed and treated there.
However, he says such referrals would not be made if the hospital had the imaging machine.
The administrator adds that even if the hospital had the machine, it does not have the personnel to operate it.
“We are lacking a radiography machine and even if we had it, we don’t have anybody to operate it. This is why we always send patients who need such services to Kampala in form of referrals. This wouldn’t happen if we had everything here,” Mr Ojok says.
The Hoima West Division Member of Parliament, Dr Joseph Ruyonga, is concerned about the situation at the hospital that serves 10 districts.
He wonders how the hospital does not have a digital X-Ray and other machines essential for human disease diagnosis to save lives for patients who seek treatment there.
Dr Ruyonga pledges to inform the relevant authorities to act urgently on the matter so patients can be worked on from the regional hospital to save lives and cut all forms of costs incurred in the process of looking for treatment.
“I’m going to write to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr Diana Atwine, and the Minister of Health, Dr Jane Ruth Acheng, to ensure that the lack of such machines as digital X-ray and others is addressed and the equipment is availed,” Dr Ruyonga who is a medical doctor and former Hoima District Health Officer promises.
The Mayor of Hoima City, Mr Brian Kaboyo, pledges to address some challenges people and patients at the hospital are facing through teamwork with leaders from all walks of life.
“We want to make sure that there’s good service delivery to our people. We have to achieve this by urging the concerned authorities to provide the currently unavailable medical equipment in the hospital. To push for good services, Hoima city authorities shall institute a board that will monitor the operations of the hospital and collect people’s views for action,” Mr Kaboyo says.
This after the city authorities led by Dr Ruyonga paid a visit to the hospital to evaluate the current situation at the health facility in terms of available equipment and general and specialised health services.
Hoima Regional Referral Hospital serves Hoima, Masindi, Kiryandongo, Buliisa, Kikuube, Kagadi, Kibaale and Kakumiro districts in Bunyoro sub-region and Kyankwanzi and Kiboga districts in Buganda region.
