A female inmate reportedly killed by a fellow inmate at Masindi government prison on Tuesday afternoon, December 29, 2020.

Mr Frank Baine, the prisons spokesperson identified the deceased as Betty Nyesigire who had been on remand on charges of murder while the suspect has been identified as Joan Bainomugisa, on a 19-year-jail sentence for the same offence.
“Both are residents of Hoima district. Nyesigire has been taking care of Bainomugisa because she was isolated after developing a mental problem.The deceased entered Bainomugisa’s room where she was hit with a blunt object that killed her instantly,” Mr Baine said.
Mr Baine said Nyesigire who had been taking care of Bainomugisa who had been isolated from other inmates after developing a mental problem entered Bainomugisa’s room from where she hit her with a blunt object killing her instantly.
The spokesperson added that as the prison authorities counted the number of inmates on Tuesday evening they realised that Nyesigire was missing only to find her laying dead in a pool of blood in Bainomugisa’s room.

Mr Baine said that Bainomugisa was sentenced to Masindi government prison in 2019 after killing her husband.
Police took Nyesigire’s body to Masindi General Hospital for a postmortem before it was taken to Hoima for burial.
The Albertine region police spokesperson, Mr Julius Allan Hakiza, confirmed the reports when contacted but said he did not have details about it.
