Jiggers infest Kagadi, kill traditional healer

A foot infected with jiggers.

An outbreak of jiggers has killed at least one person and taken host in several residents in at least two town councils in Kagadi District.

The Kagadi Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Ms Lillian Ruteraho, says the parasites have infested Kyaterekera and Rugashali town councils leaving a 46-year-old traditional healer identified only as Rupin dead.

Rupin, a resident of Mpumude cell in Kyaterekera town council died yesterday (Sunday) after spending a long time suffering from jiggers that had infected him all over the body.

Commissioning the Rugashali-Kyabitundu-Burora-Kyakabadiima Road yesterday, Ms Ruteraho expressed worry over the increasing cases of jigger infestation among residents in the district.

She wondered that both parents and children have been infected with the parasites; attributing it partly to poor hygiene.

The RDC said children in Kyabitundu cell, Rugashali town council have been seriously infected with jiggers that she blamed on child neglect.

Ms Ruteraho warned parents especially mothers against consuming excessive alcohol that she said contribute a lot to increasing cases of jigger infections in the district since they do not have time to take care of their children’s hygiene.

  1. I know some don’t try to take care of their children but it is hard for families when they have nothing. One set of clothes each, no beds hard to get food and sometimes only the mother to take care of them.
