The President of the National Economic Empowerment Dialogue (NEED) cum former presidential candidate, Mr Joseph Kabuleta, has been arrested.

He was picked up by plain-clothed security operatives today (Monday) at around 1pm from NEED offices in Kampala shortly after he had held the party’s weekly press conference.

NEED tweeted shortly after Mr Kabuleta’s arrest: “President Kabuleta has been abducted by army men not in uniform from his Need Offices, Bugolobi and taken to CID Kibuli right after his national address about the security issues in the country,” despite the police were yet to confirm this by press time.

It was not immediately clear why he was arrested but two weeks ago, police summoned him to be questioned about comments he made five months ago that police say were divisive.

Mr Kabuleta was ordered to appear before the police CID commander on November 4, 2022 but did not show up.

According to the police summon, Mr Kabuleta, who is also an evangelist is accused of making tribal based comments on May 30, 2022.

Mr Kabuleta was in 2019 arrested on charges of offensive communication against President Yoweri Museveni.

By then, he had been publishing articles on his social media platforms about the succession battle that is raging within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Mr Museveni, the NRM chairman has been in power for 36 years now.
