Police in Kikuube have in detention the Kikuube District Councillor for Kyangwali Sub-county, Nestoli Tumwesige, on charges of assault and threatening violence.

The councillor was arrested yesterday (Wednesday) for assaulting the district female councillor for Kiziramfumbi town council, Zulia Mbalirwa, on April 28, 2022, at Nyairongo village in Kabwoya sub-county.

The incident occurred when the councillors and other district big shots accompanied State Minister for Lands, Samuel Mayanja, to Kyangwali ancestral land to fact-find how the eviction of some illegal loggers and charcoal burners in part of Bugoma forest that belongs to Hoima Sugar Ltd was conducted.

Tumwesige was arrested from the offices of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) at Kikuube trading centre after Mbalirwa filed an assault case against him at Kikuube central police station.

Reports indicate that Tumwesigye allegedly accused Mbalirwa of supporting the Kikuube Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr Amlan Tumusiime during the minister’s visit.

The Albertine region police Public Relations Officer, ASP Julius Allan Hakiza, condemns Tumwesige’s act saying as a leader, he is obliged to observe the law so other people can emulate him.

The police officer says Tumwesige will be arraigned before court once investigations are complete.
