Masindi accident claims one, four sustain injuries

One person has died and four others are nursing wounds they sustained following a nasty accident along Masindi-Kigumba Road in Masindi District this (Friday) morning.

The deceased has been identified as Halima Balemesa, in her 50s, while her husband cum Imam of Labongo Mosque in Labongo sub-county has been identified as Sulait Mugenyi. Their kid and two others’ identities could not be readily established by press time.

The accident occurred near the gate of Masindi army barracks at around 8am in Masindi Municipality when a motorcycle whose registration number was not readily established knocked another motorcycle that was carrying a man, his wife and their three year old child.

Mr Erias Kiirya, the deceased’s relative, told Kazi-njema News reporter that the accident happened when the motorcycle on which the couple was taking the kid to Masindi General Hospital for treatment was knocked from behind by a speeding motorcycle carrying two people.

Mr Kiirya explained that all the people who were on the two motorcycles fell but Balemesa hit her head on the ground dying instantly.

The rider of the motorcycle that hit the other from the rear sustained minor injuries and fled the scene on his motorcycle while Balemesa’s body was taken to Masindi Hospital for postmortem before it was later taken home to Kiralire village in Labongo sub-county.

The three who sustained injuries were by press time still receiving treatment at Masindi Hospital.

The accident comes less than a day after the District Police Commander, Vincent Irama, warned road users against excitement while using the polished Masindi-Kigumba Road that is nearing completion to avoid road carnage.
