Ministries convene today ahead of Commonwealth Games

The Ministry of Education and Sports and the Ministry for Finance today (Wednesday) sit in a meeting to find a solution for Ugandan athletes to participate in the Commonwealth Games.

Sports State Minister, Hamson Mr Obua, discloses that the meeting follows other meetings that have recently been held and letters written to ensure that funding for Uganda’s athletes at the games is available.

“The last letter is dated April 25, 2022, and a meeting has been called on May 4, 2022 (today) between the Minister for Education and Sports and the Minister for Finance to find a solution for Team Uganda to participate,” he says.

The minister says the athletes have not yet started preparations for the games.

“We want results and good performance but we are not participating in the preparations for better results. We request government to expedite funds for the sports people who are to participate at the Commonwealth Games in two months’ time,” Mr Obua says.

Government will provide Shs7.1b to support the athletes who will participate in the games that will take place between 28 July and 8 August 2022 in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

He reveals that Uganda will be represented in 13 sports disciplines after it qualified for athletics, rugby, table tennis, netball and badminton adding that the pending qualifications are in weightlifting and basketball among others.

So far, 58 out of 72 Commonwealth Games Associations have confirmed that they will send athletes to the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
