National Resistance Movement (NRM) party members have been initiated into learning Kiswahili language skills nationwide.
This is in a bid to align with the broader East African integration agenda where Kiswahili has gained prominence as a regional common language.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister for East African Affairs, Ms Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, the State Minister for East African Community Affairs, Mr James Magode Ikuya, stressed the profound significance of this language programme.
“Learning Kiswahili isn’t merely a pastime. It is an integral part of embracing African languages, culture and customs. This endeavour is essential as we embark on the African liberation process, reconnecting Africans with their heritage,” Mr Ikuya stated.
Adding: “No other language can teach you haow to be truly African. Our journey begins by speaking African languages. It is a path to deepen our struggle for the liberation of Africa and to restore the dignity of African people. Let us hold the right attitude toward all things African.”
Speaking at the launch today (Thursday), September 14, 2023, at the NRM Secretariat, the party General Secretary, Mr Richard Todwong, highlighted the broader implications of the Kiswahili language initiative in the context of effective communication among others.
To ensure accessibility, the Kiswahili programme that will be open to all party cadres and members of the public will be held every Wednesday at the NRM National Secretariat beginning with September 13, 2023, from 8am to midday.
