In a bid to sequence carbon that will be emitted in the course of oil production activities, more than 20,000 trees are to be planted around Kingfisher oilfield in Kyangwali Sub-county, Kikuube District.

At the launch of the exercise by the General Manager Luwero Industries Ltd, Maj Gen Sabiiti Muzeyi, more than 1,000 trees were planted at the construction site of the drilling, waste treatment and disposal facility for the kingfisher oilfield operated by CNOOC Uganda Ltd.

Luwero Industries Ltd, a subsidiary of the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), the commercial arm of the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs was contracted to manage waste that will be accumulated from the drilling of crude oil.

Maj Gen Sabiiti said Luwero Industries Ltd projects to end the tree planting exercise in two years disclosing that in that period, more than 2,000 trees will be planted in areas where oil and gas activities are underway in the Albertine Graben.

This is being done to alleviate the negative weather effects that might accrue as a result of carbon emissions from the machinery that will be in operation to see oil production progress in the Bunyoro region.
