A one and a half-year-old baby has died after being mauled by a pig at Kateera Village in Ddwaniro Sub-county, Rakai District.

The baby’s mother, Peace Tukwasibwe said the incident took place on Friday when she was in the kitchen preparing breakfast while her baby was sleeping on a mattress in the house.

She said the pig entered the house through the rear door of the house before ripping the baby’s face, devoured her nose, lips, left hand, stomach and some flesh on the stomach.

However, it is puzzling since the baby girl did not cry in pain to attract her mother’s attention.

Mr Benedict Kyeyune, a family friend said Tukwasibwe learnt of her baby’s death when she went inside the house to breastfeed her only to find her faceless body lying in a pool of blood as the pig continued gnawing her hand.

“It was too late for Tukwasibwe to save the baby,” he said.

On seeing this, Tukwasibwe raised an alarm that attracted neighbours to the scene.

Her husband was not at home at the time of the incident.

Mr Abraham Muhangi, another resident said angry residents killed them, cut its stomach open and found fingers and some parts of the baby’s body.

They later cut the pig into pieces and burnt it to ashes.

Mr Tom Yiga Mulindwa, the Ddwaniro Sub-county Chairman, attributed the incident to the family’s failure to keep the pigs in the sty, thus, exposing the baby to danger.

Mr Samuel Ssewagude, a pig farmer in the area says some pigs are aggressive especially when they are pregnant.
