UPDF soldier arrested for shooting civilian dead in Zombo

A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier, Pte John Tumukunde, 29, is being held at Zombo military barracks in Zombo District for shooting and killing Francisco Ongeyowun, 28, on Wednesday, January 6, 2021.

Ongeyowun, a resident of Logo Village in Ndara Parish, Alangi Sub-county in Zombo District was shot at around 8pm during a security personnel patrol.

After being shot, Ongeyowun was rushed to a nearby private clinic before being transferred and admitted to Alangi Health Centre 3 where he was pronounced dead yesterday (Thursday) January 7, 2021 at 3am.

A police report says on the fateful day, the deceased and two others were returning home from visiting their in-laws when Tumukunde of registration number RA 231406 and other UPDF soldiers on foot patrol ordered them to stop.

The police add that in the process of halting the motorcycle, Ongeyowun – the rider, was shot in the right thigh as the other two fled to different directions.

Ms Josephine Angucia, the West Nile Region Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the report to Kazi-njema News adding that a team of detectives from Paidha police station visited the scene for legal management.

The police mouthpiece said postmortem was conducted and a case of murder by shooting has been registered against the UPDF soldier under station diary reference number PDA CRB: 15/2021.

Ms Angucia said investigations into the matter are underway.
