UPDF warns Bunyoro fishermen against tricksters

Fishing on Lake Albert in Hoima District.

Fishermen on Lake Albert in Bunyoro region have been warned against con artists camouflaging as security personnel extorting money from them.

This comes days after the Joint Inter-Agency Security Taskforce on Covid-19 led by its chairperson cum Chief of Staff of the Land Forces in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Maj Gen Leopold Eric Kyanda, last week opened landing sites allowing fishermen to resume their fishing activity on Lake Albert in Hoima, Kikuube and Buliisa districts.

The landing sites were closed in May 2020 as part of measures to slow down the likelihood of Covid-19 spreading from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.

The mid western region Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Public Relations Officer, Capt Steven Tumwesige, told Kazi-njema News that the army has received information that con artists are demanding money from fishermen to purportedly allow them continue fishing.

Capt Tumwesige says the act is criminal adding that the UPDF has now deployed its personnel to the ground to arrest the culprits so they can be prosecuted in courts of law.
