Bunyoro, MTN launch Amasaza Bicycle Race

The Prime Minister (Omuhikirwa) of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, has underscored the importance of engaging specifically in bicycle race sports activity to further one’s talent to a global level as well as a markedly paying source of livelihood.

Speaking at the launch of the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom Inter-County (Amasaza) Bicycle Race at the Kingdom Parliament premises in Hoima city, Mr Andrew Kirungi Byakutaaga Ateenyi, said the competition will assist the development of the cycling sport in the kingdom.

He said the sport will also provide a platform for identifying talented cyclists who can be considered in the pool of the national team under the Uganda Cycling Association (UCA) and across international borders.

The Omuhikirwa pointed out that the bicycle race will promote a couple of desirable features including the spirit of togetherness, patience and discipline among the active actors drawn from the 15 counties of the kingdom.

“Sports promotes one’s talent and today it has become a source of living. Sports makes people’s lives and their future better and it promotes a country to greater heights. Notable athletes in this country have lifted Uganda’s flag high on the international scene,” Mr Byakutaaga said on Thursday.

Speaking on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer MTN Uganda Ltd, Mr Andrew Tusubira, the company’s Western Region Business Manager, observed that as kingdoms reinforce the importance of heritage as a nation, sports reinforce the values of unity and teamwork.

He said the organised competition seals further the partnership between MTN Uganda Ltd and Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom as entered into in 2019 to promote sports and other areas impacting on socio-economic transformation of the subjects in the kingdom.

In the partnership, MTN Uganda Ltd offered a total of Shs170m to the kingdom with Shs100m allocated equally to both bicycle race and clan football tournaments while the rest for health.

The Hoima City Deputy Mayor, Ms Sylvia Balyesiima Nalumaga, encouraged the youth to participate in the bicycle race activity saying it will help improve their talent in mind that it is a source of income to them.
