Construction works at Hoima International Airport has been suspended over Covid-19 outbreak, according to the SBC Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Amos Muriisa.
SBC/SBI Lloyds International contracted the construction of the $309m Hoima International Airport project whose progress stands at 40 percent.
Speaking at the handover of a consignment of medical supplies to Hoima District Covid-19 Task Force in Hoima Town on Tuesday, Mr Muriisa said SBC/SBI Lloyds British International has sent home more than 900 workers from different departments to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
He said only 30 essential workers have been retained adding that the company did not have any other alternative than suspending construction works. However, the PRO hastened to add that once the situation normalises, the workers will be recalled to resume their duties.
Hoima International Airport is part of the infrastructure being constructed as Uganda prepares to develop its nascent petroleum industry.
Once completed, the airport will be second to Entebbe International Airport.
It will facilitate mobilisation of equipment for the construction of the oil refinery at Kabale Parish in Buseruka Sub-county, Hoima District and also develop agriculture and tourism in the district.
