The Utilities, Standards and Wildlife court in Kampala has convicted two men of illegal possession of protected wildlife specimen and attempted export of wildlife specimen without a permit and conspiracy to commit a felony.
The two include Al-Maamari Maged Mutahar Ali, a Yemeni national and Abubakari Mustafa, a Ugandan.
Ali was sentenced to pay a fine of Shs60m for illegal possession of protected wildlife specimen, Shs60m for attempted export of wildlife specimen without a permit and a caution for conspiracy to commit a felony.
Court further ordered for his deportation from Uganda.
His driver, Mustafa, was sentenced to pay a fine of Shs20m for attempted export of wildlife without a permit and a caution for conspiracy to commit a felony.
Court forfeited to Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) a motor vehicle registration number UBH 194E that the duo used in the commission of the offences.
The two were arrested on May 29, 2022 at Entebbe International Airport with 26 species of rhinoceros horns weighing 15 kilogrammes.
These were concealed in food items to disguise their identity.
UWA applauds the media, judiciary, security agencies and the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for supporting the conservation of wildlife in Uganda.
