Following the withdrawal of six of the seven candidates contesting for the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer ahead of the Hoima District LC 5 Chairmanship by-elections, the party Electoral Commission Chairman, Dr Tanga Odoi, has officially suspended the campaigns.

During a meeting with the candidates in Hoima city today (Tuesday) August 8, 2023, the chairman announced that campaign rallies have been postponed for two days including today and tomorrow (Wednesday), August 9, 2023, as the party finds a solution to accusations levied against some candidates.

Dr Odoi said he has received complaints from some candidates accusing one among them of getting external funding from his relative in order to finance goons who heckle and boo and cause havoc against other candidates during the joint campaign rallies.

He added that other candidates accuse another of their own of allegedly ferrying drunkards to the venues to disrupt the joint campaigns.

It is on this background that Dr Odoi resolved to suspend the campaigns as he interfaces with different stakeholders to discuss ways of harmonising the situation to ascertain that the campaigns and poll move on smoothly.

He also said since the six candidates except Mr Uthman Mubarak Mugisha petitioned the NRM party chairman, who is also the President of the Republic of Uganda, Mr Yoweri Museveni, over the matter, the party Electoral Commission awaits his response.

Before Dr Odoi’s intervention, the five candidates accused Mr Mugisha and Mr Vincent Muhumuza aka Savannah of ferrying drunkards and their supporters from Hoima city to disrupt campaign speeches for other candidates.

Other candidates in the race include Mr Yunus Mugabe, Mr Samwiri Byaruhanga better known as Kyakadongo, Mr Moses Mutagwa, Mr Jackson Mugenyi Mulindambura and Mr John Kwemara.

The Hoima LC 5 chairmanship seat fell vacant when the former chairman, Kadiri Kirungi, died in a motor crash in March this year. Now, his son, Mr Mugisha is vying for it.
