The number of persons that have been confirmed dead following yesterday (Sunday) night road accident in Kagadi District has risen to 18 up from 16 reported by today mid-day.
The crash involving a passenger taxi and a trailer occurred along Kagadi-Kyenjojo Road in western Uganda.
While speaking to Kagadi Broadcasting Services (KBS) radio based in Kagadi town about two hours ago, SP Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Regional Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the death toll rising to 18.
However, sources on ground say the number had reached 20 by 7pm today when some survivors passed on at Kagadi district hospital.
The crash occurred in Karalike cell in Nyanseke ward, Muhorro town council in Kagadi district when a cargo trailer registration number UAD 431Q had a head-on collision with a passenger taxi registration number UBM 426V that was returning from Fort portal at around 7:30pm carrying people who had gone for a burial ceremony.
Preliminary reports indicate that the trailer driver failed to negotiate a sharp corner due to an abrupt mechanical condition and consequently knocked the taxi.
No death or injuries have been reported on the side of the occupants of the trailer.
The deceased include Henry Acaali, the taxi driver; Ruth Mbabazi, Ellen Abitekaniza and Joyce Kubanza all residents of Kagadi town council.
Unconfirmed reports say the only survivor in the taxi, Hosea Musisi, a student at Kicwamba Technical College in Fort Portal is also in a critical condition in Muhorro town.
