Masindi police are holding a man identified as James Oyungi for purportedly strangling his wife to death.

Oyungi, a resident of Bubanda village in Ntooma parish, Bwijanga sub-county in Masindi district allegedly strangled Christine Atimango, 38, and resident of the same area.

It is purported that Oyungi on Thursday night picked a quarrel with his wife for yet to be known reasons and in the process he strangled her to death before dumping her body in their compound, according to Fred Candia – a neighbour to the couple.

“We were shocked to find the lifeless body of Atimango lying in the compound on Friday. We immediately alerted the police who swung into action and arrested the suspect with the help of areas residents.”

The Albertine Region Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Julius Allan Hakiza, says the Atimango’s body was taken to Masindi Genral Hospital for postmortem where it was found that the deceased had bruises in the neck – symbolic of being strangled to death.

The police officer says Oyungi is currently detained at Masindi Central Police Station to help the police in investigations.

He says once investigations are done, Oyungi will be arraigned before court on charges of murder.
