Leaders in Masindi District have Wednesday evening unanimously resolved that Bulera Core Primary Teachers College (PTC) in Hoima City be relocated to Kamurasi PTC in Masindi to create space for the establishment of a public Bunyoro University.
During a meeting presided over by the Chairperson Bunyoro Public University Steering Committee, Mr Jacob Karubanga, the members said once relocated from Hoima to Masindi, Bulera PTC will be housed in the structures of Kamurasi PTC that sits on 40 acres of land.
The chairperson, who is also the Member of Parliament for Kibanda South constituency in Kiryandongo district, said since the educational establishment will be a college model university with different faculties in different districts, it will be unequivocal for Hoima to offer health science courses given the current school of nursing and midwifery and a regional referral hospital in the area as Masindi offers business and oil and gas courses.
He said it was agreed in the meeting that the seat of the university should be in Hoima because it is centrally positioned in Bunyoro.
However, Owek Dr Patrick Byakagaba, a member of the steering committee and Chairperson Reparation and Restitution Committee Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, said there will be need for construction of more building structures at Kamurasi PTC to accommodate Bulera PTC once shifted from Hoima.
The Member of Parliament for Masindi Municipality, Mr Joab Busiinge, the Deputy Mayor Masindi Municipality, Ms Betty Kyomuhendo and the Senior Presidential Advisor on Oil and Gas, Dr Fred Kabagambe Kaliisa said once effected, the initiative will be of great benefit to the people of Bunyoro.
Mr Peter Ayebale, the acting Masindi Municipal Education Officer, said having the relocation of Bulera Core PTC from Hoima is of great benefit to the people of Masindi.
While reading the budget for FY 2022/23, Finance, Planning and Economic Development Minister, Mr Matia Kasaija, said “consultations to operationalise Bunyoro University will commence next financial year 2023/24”.
