The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development with funding from the World Bank has committed Shs16.4b for the construction of 70km of first class gravel roads in Kikuube District.

Some the roads to be constructed include the 13.9km-Kinogozi-Kigaaya, 12km-Kabanyansi-Musaijamukuru and the 17km-Kyangwali –Tontema – Mahamba among others.

Works are being implemented under the Albertine Region Sustainable Development Project (ARSDP) that was initiated by the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development to improve infrastructure in the region.

In March this year, the ministry contracted JV Capital Abubaker to undertake the construction of 70kms of six roads in the district for a period of nine months.

The Project Site Engineer, Charles Odong, said construction work delayed to commence for three months because they had to engage community members who wanted compensation and also set up a laboratory to test materials that will be used.

He added that construction includes environmental restoration and general fill of the road among others at a tune of Shs16.4b.

The Nyarugabu Parish Chairman in Bugambe sub-county, Mr Yesero Alinaitwe, said the roads had been maintained by the community but now he is optimistic that construction work will ease access to various public facilities.

Ms Everce Munguriek, the Kikuube District Local Government Secretary for Works, urged the community to cooperate with the road constructors

The Buhaguzi County Member of Parliament, Mr Francis Twinomujuni Kazini, urged the contractor to consider local content for employment.

He also advised the residents to use the roads to increase their household income.

This week, the Kikuube District Roads Committee conducted a site inspection of some of the roads that are to be constructed.
