Rains destroy Shs22m Masindi drainage system shortly after being commissioned

Men work on broken Masindi Central Market drainage system.

Torrential rains have washed away the Masindi central market drainage system in Masindi Town, few hours after being commissioned.

The Shs22m channel that was constructed to drain water from the market was commissioned by Masindi Municipality and Central Division officials headed by the mayor, Mr Joab Busiinge, on Tuesday evening.

However, the heavy rain that pounded the area few hours later washed part of the channel away leading to part of it to collapse.

The vendors blamed the incident on shoddy work caused by the municipal authorities’ failure to supervise the project.

“The mayor and his cabinet have been here commissioning the drainage that finally just collapsed. They used little cement and much sand in the construction of the drainage channel. They were telling us to go and wash our food away from the channel knowing that they used little cement.”

But Mr Frederick Bagonza Mandela, the Central Division LC 3 chairman dismissed the allegations saying the drainage system was constructed in a busy place forcing people to step on it resulting into destruction.

However, the chairman admitted that there were some defects that were detected during the commissioning and the municipal engineer instructed the contractor to fix the imperfections.

By the time of this publication, work to fix the damage had already begun.
