URA arrests skin cancer causing cosmetics smuggler

Mr Ibrahim Bbossa, the Uganda Revenue Authority Publicist.

Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has arrested a 37-year-old man, John Bbale, resident of Luwero for dealing in contraband cosmetics.

Mr Julius Nkwasirwe, the Assistant Commissioner Enforcement, says Bbale was arrested after being found with 206 cartons of contraband skin cancer causing cosmetics that contain hydroquinone and mercury including Carolight, Cocopulp and Beaution creams weighing 1,769kgs.

He says Bbale was arrested on Saturday, July 9, 2022 when URA Team One Intelligence network outmatched the speed of his Toyota Hiace car registration number UBL 725L and put him out of action in Wobulenzi before he was taken to Nakawa Enforcement for further management.

Mr Nkwasire says the culprit is detained pending investigations.

“The smugglers are killing our economy by not paying the rightful taxes and are also frustrating the goal of government to supply services needed for the population,” Mr Nkwasire says of notorious smugglers.

Mr Ibrahim Bbossa, the URA Spokesperson, says both the cosmetics and vehicle have been seized as guided by the East African Community Management Act (EACCMA).

“It is incumbent on us as a revenue mobiliser to work with other government agencies to take action,” Mr Bbossa says.
