UNRA moves to restore works at Karuma Bridge

Part of the destroyed Karuma Bridge on River Nile.

A team from the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) Masindi Branch has today Wednesday been dispatched to Nwoya District to restore the destroyed protective rails on Karuma Bridge.

Mr Allan Ssempebwa, the UNRA’s Media Relations Manager, told the press that the destroyed rails had actually been replaced last week after a minor accident before that which occurred on Tuesday at around 10:20am where a truck driver, James Tumusiime and his turn man, Geoffrey Lushata perished in the water of the Nile River.

He advises motorists to take extra care while crossing the bridge revealing that the rails are currently not strong enough to protect them from any crash that can lead the road users plunging into the fast-flowing river water.

To relatively guard against the fatal accidents recorded at the bridge, Mr Ssempebwa discloses that UNRA is waiting for the government final decision to construct a new and bigger bridge at Karuma.

On Tuesday, the speeding Mercedes Sino truck registration number UAT 113F en-route from Nwoya district to Kampala hit and destroyed the protective rails at the bridge before it plunged into the river.

The crash occurred when the driver lost control of the vehicle near the bridge.

Efforts to retrieve the wreckage are still underway, according to the police.
